MEDIALAB TRADITIONS

Dec 30, 2019

We take our holiday season very seriously around here at MediaLab. It’s our favorite time of year, after all.

Spooky season decorations, potlucks, holiday volunteering, ugly sweater parties… our traditions hold true each year. And it’s something we all look forward to, especially after a year of hard work.

IT ALL STARTS ON HALLOWEEN.

Despite the last bit of summer heat in October (we had the hottest October ever here in Tampa), we kick off the fall and winter festivities with our costume contest. Our team dresses up in the scariest, funniest, and most clever costumes they can come up with and we all vote on our favorites.

This year, we had visits from the twins from The Shining, Jack Skellington, a T-Rex, Ricky Bob Ross and So. Many. More. Halloween might be our favorite; it gives our team the opportunity to have fun around the office all day. It’s even more fun when our meetings consist of a unicorn, Lydia Deetz, a surgeon, and our CEO…

ONE HOLIDAY AT A TIME

We’re not one to jump straight to Christmas after Halloween, either. Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to have a big team lunch together, catered with all the good stuff: turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, and biscuits.

But, that’s not all. While our team are experts with CGI, they’re also experts in the kitchen. Homemade peanut butter cake, apple turnovers, gooey butter bars… our teams’ cooking skills are our best kept secret. Thanks to The Mannequin Challenge trend one year, we even got to have a little fun with the leftovers.

We push through the tail end of the year with a month of holiday festivities. We decorate our cubes and put on our Christmas playlists the first week of December to get us in the Christmas spirit.

You’ll see lights, stockings, Christmas trees, and snowflakes around the office. The TVs hung around each department are lit with a crackling fireplace. Our alcove is decked with a holiday wall and a white Christmas tree sprinkled with gifts for our Secret Santa Gift Exchange that happens later in the month. Our holiday-themed beer cart wheels through the office on a Thursday and we close out the week with a holiday bake-off. We told you we had experts in the kitchen!

The week before our Christmas vacation, our MAYS (MediaLab At Your Service!) team gets together for our last volunteer event of the year, delivering hot meals to our neighbors. We celebrate the ugliest of Christmas sweaters and exchange our Secret Santa gifts.

We share the year’s funniest moments and reminisce over the accomplishments we all achieved. Some teams take an afternoon off to spend time together, chatting over happy hour, bowling, or playing laser tag.

Finally, to kick off the new year, the beer cart rolls through the office once more, getting our MediaLab family ready for the New Year. Surely, we’re rested and ready to hit the ground running come January 2nd thanks to strong, festive end to our year. The fun doesn’t stop there, though. We’ll be Toasting to the 20s at our annual holiday party in January.

The holiday season means a lot to us. While we’re making those last-minute deadlines and discussing the plans for the following year, we’re able to enjoy our yearly traditions in the meantime.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

From all of us at MediaLab, we hope every one of our clients, team members, friends, and families have a wonderful and safe holiday season. We hope everyone enjoys their own holiday traditions, too!
